Message from Andrew Sommerville, Bellingen Rotary People to People Coordinator

Two groups of 45 students and leaders from the US People-to-People Program will be hosted by members and friends of the Rotary Club of Bellingen, 17-19 June 2010 and 15-17 July 2010. The program, started by then-President Eisenhower, gives American students an opportunity to experience other countries of the world, with a view to developing better international relationships.

This also happens to be one of the goals of Rotary.

It is a great way to showcase Bellingen to American teenagers who will be leaving school and travelling in the next few years. It involves bring 90 odd Americans to town to spend a few days (and $$) here, and it is the major fundraiser for the year for the Rotary Club of Bellingen. But best of all, it is great fun for all involved!

The Purpose of the Home Stay

A home stay with a host family is an important element of the Student Ambassador Program. The purpose of the home stay is to introduce students to the culture and lifestyle of the host country. A short stay with a family can often provide experiences that will last a lifetime, giving the student a clear understanding of the cultural differences between the host country and the United States.

The Rotary Club of Bellingen is looking for host families to be part of this great program. Would you like to share your home for a few days with some American students and show them the real Australia and in particular our little part of paradise. This is a very rewarding program for all involved. You can help develop better international relationships, one person at a time.

Below is ‘Host Family Information 2010’ for your information and ‘Principles of a Successful Home Stay Form’ which has an acceptance form to complete to be part of the program. Please indicate which dates would suit you, or if you would be happy doing both. If you would like an further information please ring me on 6655 0025.

Please pass along your networks especially to anyone you know in the local African community. Several volunteers of the “unofficial” informal 100% voluntary permablitz Bellingen group are in discussion about how best to establish African gardens across the Coffs Coast. At the 2009 International Permaculture Convergence in Malawi it was decided that Permaculture International should focus on Africa. So lets all do all we can to establish gardens to grow traditional African food locally!!

Good Morning ALL,

I am concerned that there has been a media release recently (NDL 14/11/2009) from a large training provider stating that all Hospitality workers require training for food safety.

I have placed the current information from the NSW Food Authority in relation to Food Safety Training requirements for workers in Hospitality and Retail sectors that will be of interest for our clients. see release from Food Authority NSW and also the Ministers Release dated 13th November 2009 THAT states -

QUOTE – Media Release – Food Authority NSW 13th November 2009

New law makes eating out safer

Food from NSW restaurants, take-always, bakeries, caterers, pubs and clubs will be safer to eat when legislation passed by the State Government this week takes effect, Minister for Primary Industries Ian Macdonald said today.“The new Food Amendment (Food Safety Supervisor) Bill will require food businesses in the NSW hospitality and retail food service sector to appoint a food safety supervisor,” said Minister Macdonald.

“These Food Safety Supervisors will need to complete mandatory training and be in a position to implement safe food handling practice in the business.“This is another step towards realising the NSW government’s visions of a safe and secure food supply coupled with a strong, profitable hospitality industry,” he said.

Minister Macdonald said Food Safety Supervisors would be required to have a NSW Food Safety Supervisor Certificate. “The mandatory food handler training will formalise skills and knowledge by requiring completion of accredited training within the national Vocational and Education and Training system. “The initiative will also align with the training requirements for a food safety supervisor in Queensland and Victoria, ensuring mutual recognition of qualifications for food safety supervisors across the eastern seaboard states.” Mr Macdonald said the scheme would commence in April 2010, although businesses would have a full 12 months to comply and must demonstrate compliance by April 2011.

QUOTE – Media Release – Retail outlets and restaurants 13th November 2009 – Proposed food handler training initiative

The Authority is working closely with the hospitality industry to develop a mandatory food handler training initiative to help safeguard NSW consumers from foodborne illness. The proposed initiative will require certain food businesses in the hospitality and retail food service sector to have at least one trained Food Safety Supervisor (FSS).

Businesses include: restaurants, cafes, take-away shops, caterers, bakeries, pubs, clubs, hotels and supermarket hot food sales.

Training requirements will be linked to nationally recognised units of competency within the Vocational Education and Training (VET) system. Proposed training requirements: Food Business – Hospitality and retail food service -

National Competency code

SITXOHS002A Follow workplace hygiene procedures and

SITXFSA001A Implement food safety procedures OR SIRRFSA001A Apply retail food safety practices

It is anticipated that the new requirements will begin in April 2010, and that businesses will have until April 2011 to comply. This is to give businesses time to undertake Food Safety Supervisor training.

I will keep you informed of any FURTHER changes that come to hand.

Regards,

Bellingen High School was recently awarded a Commonwealth Govt. grant under the Jobs Fund Getting Communities Working Together program. The project provides a resource for Aboriginal people, the wider community in Bellingen and surrounding areas. The focal point will be the Guubuny Aboriginal Community Resource Centre, located at Bellingen High School. Guubuny is the Gumbaynggirr word for owl. The building was originally a tractor shed, then a wood store and has now been refurbished and has become the resource centre. Work began this week on an adjacent outdoor learning centre with funds provided by the grant.

Aboriginal Education workers at the school contacted Nortec Employment and Training for recruitment of four labourers to be involved in construction of the outdoor learning area and to find suitable applicants for the 6 ongoing roles which will form the foundation of services – a Co-ordinator, tutors and a trainee.

Carol Leon President of the Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG) said “this project offers an ideal environment for students to learn, increasing educational opportunities through the support of Aboriginal workers and is a huge stepping stone to making a real difference in this local community”.

Jenni Davies Area Manager of Nortec Employment and Training says “there is an overwhelming sense of pride in all people that are contributing to this project. A visit to the project saw around 20 people working industriously in making the outdoor learning centre into an ideal space – the students putting the final touches on a mural under the instruction and guidance of Aboriginal Education Officer Brydi Fatnowna.

Aboriginal Education Worker, Jenni Farrands stated “the aim of the grant is to provide an opportunity to truly integrate Gumbaynggirr and other Aboriginal cultures and communities into education in the Bellinger Valley.”
