Is Your Business FloodSafe?
Be wise, Be clever and Be Prepared!

Does your business know what to do if flooding is predicted?

Flooding causes an average of $128 million damage in NSW each year.

A business in the Bellingen area is more likely to suffer damage from a flood than a fire.

At this business breakfast you will hear from Bellingen SES and Bellingen Shire Council about the impact of local floods, the role of SES during floods, and what steps your business can take to be better prepared. At the end of the session you can take a free copy of the SES Business FloodSafe Toolkit.

Don’t be a victim of Crime – Prevention is better than cure!!

Inspector Brendan Gorman from the Coffs Clarence Local Area Command will be talking to business owners about crime prevention. He will be passing on tips and strategies to minimise the risk to your business of crime. Inspector Gorman joined the police in 1990, graduating in 1991. He has spent most of his working life policing in Western Sydney until his promotion to Inspector with Coffs/Clarence LAC in December 2011.

Message from BCoC member UMCC. GREAT VALUE – $250 workshop following breakfast for free, bring pen and paper and learn a lot more about “Creativity in Business”.

You are invited to attend the next Urunga Mylestom Chamber of Commerce Breakfast, followed by the “Funnel Thinking” Masterclass….

Our Guest Speaker – Nigel Collin

Nigel will make his introduction, which will be followed by his FUNNEL THINKING MASTERCLASS taking place from 9am-12 noon. Regional Development Australia – Mid North Coast is funding the masterclass which means a saving of around $250 each by attending. Why not take full advantage of this fantastic opportunity? Come along to the breakfast then stay for the masterclass at no extra cost.

About Nigel

Nigel Collin is a champion of creativity, which means he works with business leaders to help them lead their creative people to get results and achieve business growth. After 15 years in the creative sector Nigel realized the challenge with creativity is not in finding creative people, or teaching your people to be more creative. It’s in knowing how to lead your creative people, harness their genius and direct it towards viable business outcomes.

If you can increase your creative capital you will also increase the value of your business, be more adaptable, and outpace your competition.

A Dynamic, interactive and practical speaker and facilitator, it is Nigel’s genuine knowledge and experience that sets him apart from others. He is one of those rare people whose passion and knowledge of creativity will engage, inspire, but more importantly make a difference to your people and your business.

Summary of the “Funnel Thinking” Masterclass:

The world is full of ideas. So how do you come up with ideas that are workable and commercially viable? Ideas that you can implement and that make a real difference to your business. The aim is to give you and your people the knowledge, skills and confidence you need to think more creatively everyday and generate workable ideas.

You will learn to apply our unique model to help generate and capture ideas and then funnel them down into workable solutions and outcomes. You will also learn and use a variety of relevant thinking tools. 46% of business leaders we surveyed said they didn’t have a process to harness and direct creativity. This workshop is specifically designed to give you a process to generate workable ideas and solutions and keep coming up with them

Our thanks to

Olivia was born in Milan, Italy and educated in the UK with a Social Anthropology degree from the London School of Economics.

She has been involved in environmental activism and social change from an early age, beginning in Italy and the UK. After some years of traveling and living in Indigenous communities in South America, India and Thailand, she moved to Bellingen with her 2 year old son, Surya, in 2002. They moved to an intentional community in Thora, where Olivia learnt to milk goats and grow a vegetable garden.

In 2008 she acquired a Masters degree in Social Ecology from The University of Western Sydney and became active in the Bellingen Climate Action Group, which later became Transition Bellingen, as steering committee member, event coordinator, workshop facilitator and media liaison person. Olivia has also worked as a Yoga teacher for the past 10 years and as an environmental educator with Bellingen Environmental Youth Experience.

Olivia have been actively engaged in supporting the North Bank Community Garden since it first started, mainly as a fund raiser and event coordinator to further community support for this project. She has a great passion for eating and sharing local, fresh and seasonal food. This inspired her to collaborate with the Bellingen Chamber of Commerce and the North Bank Community Garden to launch the Edible Streetscape project.

‘I believe that community gardens don’t only grow food, they also grow community. Sustainable and local food production lies at the heart of a community’s resilience. I feel passionate about Bellingen becoming a model “local food town” and leading the way in developing creative alternatives to meet our town’s food needs’.

Network with other business owners and gain an insight into issues affecting your town and business while enjoying a great breakfast at the Bellingen Valley Lodge

Edible Streetscapes – schools get involved and plant the trees

Enthusiastic students from Bellingen High school and Bellingen Primary were busy on Monday planting citrus trees in Connell Park for the future enjoyment of the whole community. Sara, 14, says “These trees will be great for shading kids on the way home and for them to have a fresh piece of fruit while walking”. Tegan, 13, thinks that planting trees teaches kids where food comes from and also makes the landscape more colourful and enjoyable. Robin, 10, who planted a mandarin tree, looks forwards to eating the fruit when he plays soccer next season or the following one.

These trees will also provide opportunities for young people to learn skills such as pruning, harvesting and conserving produce in the years to come.

Charlie Brennan from Bellingen Landcare says: ‘this is an enjoyable project that brings together different parts of the Bellingen community”. He adds: “These trees are being planted to raise the profile of food growing, as well as being a sources of oranges for half time!’

The planting is part of the Edible Streetscapes project, a joint initiative by the Chamber of Commerce, the North Bank Community Garden and Transition Bellingen, supported by the Coffs Coast Local Food Alliance. Edible Streetscapes’s aim is to grow food everywhere, make Bellingen a model “local food town” and provide the community with a direct experience of harvesting and eating fresh & seasonal food.

Stage 2 of Edible Streetscapes is planned for next Autumn. Your feedback and involvement in this project is very much appreciated. To get in touch, you can contact Olivia by emailing oliviaonearth@gmail.com.

BUSINESS SUSTAINABILITY & OUR LIVING COAST

The Bellingen Chamber of Commerce Spring Breakfast has, once again, two very interesting local speakers to help expand your understanding of local issues and how they could impact your business.

Pia Dollman, Project Officer, Our Living Coast (a Regional Sustainability Initiative) will bring us up to date with what this project encompasses, current involvement with the community, government programs for business sustainability and how all this could impact your business.

Pia Dollman has lived in this area since 1982 and is well known in the Bellingen community for her work as Landcare Coordinator over ten years. She has now taken that knowledge and experience into the Shires of Coffs Harbour City and Nambucca as well as Bellingen with the focus on sustainable living.

As project officer, Pia designs and implements a program for community engagement and education on sustainable living. This covers a workshop program on related topics such as renewable energy, gardening etc, a workshop series designed by CSIRO, called Energymark, a website and a business sustainability program. Pia engages with people to support their learning to make the changes they decide are necessary on this pathway.

Pia completed a Bachelor of Applied Science in Parks, Recreation & Heritage at Charles Sturt University and is now also the chairperson and media coordinator of the Bellinger Health Action Group. In her spare time, Pia likes to spend time on the beach, go horse riding and nurture the friendships in her life.

HOW DO INFRASTRUCTURE UPGRADES & FASTER BROADBAND SERVICES AFFECT YOUR BUSINESS ?

The Bellingen Chamber of Commerce has invited Anthony Jephcott, Telstra Business Centre Coffs Coast, to help unravel the complexities at the upcoming Spring Breakfast.

Anthony Jephcott and his wife Casey are the licensees of the Telstra Business Centre, Coffs Coast as well as the Telstra Store, Park Beach Plaza. They saw the opportunity to develop and grow a business on the Coffs coast and bought both businesses in July 2009. In the last 12 months the businesses have seen some phenomenal growth from 12 local employees to a team of 28 including 6 Telstra Business Certified Solutions Professionals, experts in tailoring communication solutions for businesses on the Mid-North Coast. This success they put down to the fact that the businesses are locally owned and run and so have a better understanding of what local businesses and retail customers want.

Anthony’s presentation will focus on local infrastructure upgrades that have taken place in the Bellingen region and the new faster broadband speeds plus the runout of the national broadband network. He will also cover how new technology is helping local businesses to increase productivity, shorten decision times, save costs and considerably improve customer service.

“We can help with a complete range of business technology solutions to customers; from mobile phones to more complex office phone systems,” Anthony says.

Being a local, Anthony is also heavily involved in the local community and proudly sponsors local Clubs, local schools, local sports associations, rotary Coffs Coast and more.

Once again, two fascinating local speakers to help expand your understanding of local issues at the Bellingen Chamber of Commerce ‘Spring’ Breakfast

Friday 3rd September at the Bellingen Golf Club. Registration 7am for 7.30 start. Chamber members and their guests – $25, non members – $30. Everyone welcome !

Bookings essential RSVP to Susan – coordinator@bellingenchamber.com.au
