Eclectic Night of Music & Art

Roots Records celebrate their first birthday this December and to mark the occasion they’re hosting an evening of fine music and art at the Bellingen Memorial Hall. The event is headlined by eclectic world music group Tibet2Timbuk2, supported by Master Bansuri Flutist Taro Terahara, and includes a one-off photography exhibition by renowned film maker Albert Falzon.

Rollicking Tibetan folk, afro-reggae guitar grooves and intricate Indian tabla. Sounds like an unlikely combination right? Well, think again! Tibet2Timbuk2 fuse sounds from various parts of the globe seamlessly resulting with a sound that is truly out of this world. After extensive touring in Japan, the Brisbane based band are back home and play Bellingen Memorial Hall as part of their East Coast tour. Band members Tenzin Choegyal, Marcello Milani and Shen Flindell are delighted to be bringing their unique sound to the Mid North Coast. These three versatile and talented musicians share melody, harmony, bass and percussion roles making for a performance of great diversity. At one moment their melodic grooves get you moving the next you’ll be in a blissful meditative state.

Tibet2Timbuk2 are supported by Master Bansuri Flutist Taro Terahara, one of the leading musicians in the thriving and highly competitive Indian classical music scene in Japan. Terahara has dedicated his life to the Bansuri and has spent time in India studying under great masters. His craft has taken him all over the world including performances at Woodford Folk Festival and the Festival of Tibet.

Albert Falzon is best known for his contribution to the Australian Surf Industry, in particular his cult classic 70’s surf film Morning of The Earth. He has also produced several documentaries about cultural festivals in far flung destinations around the world. Falzon’s photography exhibition showcases stunning, thought provoking images captured from his journey to remote locations in both Tibet and Timbuktu during the early 80’s.

Wired is a great afternoon of live entertainment on the riverfront at Urunga, as part of the Bellingen Shire Youth celebrations.

There will a huge line-up of local young musicians, dancers, Martial Arts, singers and MCs including: Cut loose, Off the Grid, Gosh in Ru, Barefoot Fiddlers, Never One Day,

Wired will kick off at 1:00pm at the Morgo Street Reserve Stage (opposite the Ocean View Hotel), Urunga, finishing at 5:00 pm.

Bring a picnic or just enjoy the sausage sizzle and refreshments provided by Reconnect whilst checking out free entertainment. This event is strictly drug & alcohol free.

There will also be a youth service info stall with people there from different groups to answer all your questions and provide resources on a variety of youth issues.

Popular Bands to attend Urunga’s Black Tie Dinner Dance

After a very successful “Toast to Urunga” Ball last year, organisers pounced on grabbing TOP SHELF to entertain the happy guests again this year. Virtually 100 % of the guests were busting out their best dance moves to the non stop party music TOP SHELF pumped out.

You can expect the same this year from this versatile act on the 3rd of September at the Urunga Marquee. Sound waves of nostalgic classic hits & floor fillers from 60′s to the chart toppers today. Music to suit everyone and even songs you had forgotten.

In addition, the Toast Urunga Dinner Dance Committee has secured “The Jug Addicts” from Armidale for their pre-dinner drinks entertainment and music and to set the mood over dinner. The Jug Addicts play, as the name indicates, ‘Jug Music’. This form of comical music has been around for about a century. It’s a type of vernacular music that is all about ‘word play’, a comical sense of rhyme driven by a high energy jazz feel.

The ‘Juggies’ as they are affectionately known have been around for a few years now, features Gary Jenkins on vocals, washboard and strange percussion, Adam Cafarella on jug, guitar, mandolin, kazoo and vocals, Glenn Manion on resonator, archtop, dobro, ukelele and interjections and the fabulously infamous Wendy Griffith on double bass.

Topple that with the high calibre, surprise entertainment being flown specially in from Sydney, the 3rd of September is sure to leave the audience on an absolute high.

Urunga is in for a huge night of quality music, entertainment and dancing coupled with fine food, wine and excellent company – it is certainly a night not to be missed.
