ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOUR, THEFT & VANDALISM

The anti social behaviour and vandalism perpetrated by a small number of youth recently is an out of the ordinary ‘spike’ for Bellingen that has disrupted our community and lifestyle. Adults also contribute to this problem. It will only strengthen us as a community to acknowledge the issue, identify the contributing factors and then do everything we can to resolve it.

To this end the Bellingen Chamber of Commerce have invited Mark Holahan to address our community in a rare opportunity for all interested parties to put their concerns to a man in a position to make a difference.

Everyone is invited. You don’t have to be a member, you don’t even have to have a business and the Chamber welcomes attendance by youth representatives and parents alike. This is an opportunity for the whole community.

Mark’s position takes in the ‘big picture’ and focuses on the direction and support of officers in the field. He stresses the importance of communities and supports local police dealing with local issues by leaving them in local areas.

Mark Holahan began his career in 1979. He is a family man with four children and two grandchildren on the way. His entire career, with the exception of 2 years, has been spent in regional, rural NSW.

He has served as Commander since 1995 in Darling River (Bourke area), Barrier (Broken Hill area), Mid North Coast and Lower Hunter. Prior to taking up his post in Coffs Harbour in 2007 he was Director of Operations & Professional Standards Command. He has received numerous awards: National Medal 1995 -15yrs service, Commissioners Olympic Citation 2001, NSW Police Medal – 10 years service (2003) and in the 2007 Australia Day Honours List was awarded the Australian Police Medal (APM) for Distinguished Service.

Speaking of breakfasts, our Spring breakfast is on 4th September at the Bellingen Golf Club (another new Chamber member), and will continue our commitment to bringing you speakers that can help with environmental sustainability in business as well as improving the “bottom line”. The Spring speakers will be Steve Coates of GO4 Multimedia and Flying Fox Multimedia speaking on e-commerce and search engine optimisation, together with Gwen Hannah of Building Wisdom, speaking on “greening your workplace” and creating a healthy business.

The Chamber is a founding member of the Bellingen Sustainable Business Alliance (BSBA) which came out of our Autumn breakfast and comprises The Chamber, Bellingen Shire Council, Oz Green, and the Waterfall Way Centre. Two sustainable business forums have been conducted since BSBA’s inception with fantastic attendance including business people from all parts of the shire and indeed a number of attendees from Coffs Harbour and Southern Cross University who are very interested and supportive of what we are doing in encouraging Bellingen to be a leader in Sustainable Business Practice.

The Chamber is also a founding member of the Waterfall Way Centre (WWC) which was recently successful in securing some ongoing funding from the Council’s tourism and economic development budget and the WWC continues to be a valuable asset for the Bellingen Shire that is a great example of industry working hand in hand with local, State and Federal Govt to provide a facility that benefits both the business and general community. The Chamber has recently purchased a PA system with 2 cordless microphones that is housed at WWC and available for hire at reduced rates for Chamber members there is also a laminator owned by the Chamber at the WWC, again available for use by Chamber members at reduced rates.

“This Plan outlines the future cooperative approach between Council, community and government stakeholders to address water quality in the Kalang“ said Council’s General Manager, Mike Colreavy.

“The plan has been developed through an extensive public and stakeholder consultation process and therefore very much reflects the community’s and agencies needs and recommendations with strategies and actions that are appropriate, effective and sustainable. Council is committed to improving water quality and river health and is grateful for the support of the programs key partner the NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change – Estuary Program who has assisted financially in the development of the plan.” Mr Colreavy stated.

Nine key issues were identified as matters that need attention to improve water quality and river health. In order of priority they are:

• agricultural practices
• on-site sewage management systems (OSMS)
• riparian and wetland management
• boating, tourism and recreational impacts
• waste water treatment plants
• forestry, logging and clearing
• stormwater and building construction
• rural roads and bridges
• water quality monitoring.

Council has placed the document on public display until the 16th October and seeks written comments on the draft addressed to the General Manager. Copies of the document are available at Council’s Administration Centre, the Bellingen and Urunga Libraries, Lindsay’s Oyster Barn, and Anchors Wharf or in electronic format via Council’s website www.bellingen.nsw.gov.au .
